Editorial Policy
This page explains how BestHBOT builds its directory of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) providers, how we research and date our guides, how we fix mistakes and how the site makes money. It also serves as our advertising disclosure.
How clinic listings are chosen
Every listing starts with Google Places, the business data behind Google Maps. We search Places for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in each state and city and save the results in our own database.
A search like that also returns nearby businesses that don't offer HBOT. Before anything is listed, a filter checks each result:
- A business whose name includes words like "hyperbaric", "HBOT", "oxygen", "wound" or "dive medicine" is kept.
- Otherwise, it is dropped if its name points to a different service. Examples include hospices, prosthetics, dental offices, urgent care, pharmacies, med spas, IV drip bars, saunas, cryotherapy and float studios.
- It is also dropped if Google classes it as a type of business that doesn't provide HBOT, such as a dentist, pharmacy, salon, gym or store.
- Businesses Google marks as permanently closed are dropped.
- We keep a short manual list of exceptions, to add a real provider the filter missed or remove one that slipped through.
No filter is perfect. If you spot a listing that doesn't belong, or a provider that's missing, please tell us.
A listing means a business appears to offer HBOT. It is not an endorsement. We don't inspect clinics, check staff qualifications or judge treatment quality.
How listings are updated
State pages with no clinics, and city pages with only a few, search Google Places again about once a week. New providers that pass the filter are added. We also update or remove listings when clinics or readers send corrections.
Hours, phone numbers and services can change before we hear about it. Confirm details with the clinic before you visit.
How ratings work
The star ratings and review counts on BestHBOT are Google ratings, and we label them that way. Each clinic page links to its reviews on Google.
- We don't write, edit, remove or filter reviews.
- Clinics can't pay to change their rating.
- We don't rank clinics by payment. City pages list clinics nearest first.
A Google rating reflects what reviewers chose to post. It is not a measure of medical quality or results.
How our HBOT guides are researched and sourced
We publish guides on the questions readers ask most, such as what HBOT is, cost, insurance, mild vs hard-shell chambers and side effects. Each guide follows the same rules:
- Sources we rely on. Health, cost and insurance claims are checked against the FDA, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), CMS/Medicare, major hospital systems such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Harvard Health, and peer-reviewed studies.
- Cited inline. Claims link to their source where they appear, and each guide ends with a full Sources list.
- No source, no claim. If we can't find a reliable source for something, we leave it out.
- FDA-cleared vs off-label. We keep uses the FDA has cleared, such as decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and some diabetic wounds, apart from off-label or experimental uses. We say clearly which is which.
- Costs and coverage. Cost figures give a range, a year and a source. Insurance coverage varies by plan, and we say so.
- Dated. Each guide shows a "Last reviewed" date. When we check a guide against its sources again, we update that date.
Medical review
Our guides are researched and written from the sources cited on each page. They are not currently reviewed by a licensed clinician.
Use of AI writing tools
We use writing tools, including AI, to help research and draft guides. Every claim is checked against the cited source before it's published.
Corrections and updates
We want this site to be accurate, and readers and clinics help us get there.
- Report an error. Use our contact page. Send the page link and what's wrong. If you have a source, include it.
- Clinic owners. You can ask us to correct or claim your listing. Use the "Is this your clinic?" box on your clinic's page, or contact us.
- What we do. We check the report. If it's right, we fix the page. When a fix changes a guide's facts, we update its "Last reviewed" date.
Advertising and sponsored listings
BestHBOT is free to use. We may show labelled sponsored listings and labelled ads to pay for the site. Today we show neither.
If we turn them on, these rules apply:
- Sponsored listings. A clinic may pay to appear in a row labelled "Featured ยท Sponsored" on the home page or a state or city page. That row sits apart from the main list. Links in it are marked as sponsored for search engines. Paying doesn't change the normal order of the list, the Google ratings or whether other clinics are listed.
- Ads. Display ads appear only in boxes labelled "Advertisement".
- Guides stay independent. Sponsors and advertisers don't write, review or approve our guides or listings.
We don't use affiliate links. We don't earn a commission when you call, visit or book with a clinic.
Medical disclaimer
BestHBOT is a directory and information site, not a medical provider. Nothing here is medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. HBOT isn't right for everyone, and it carries risks. Talk to your doctor before you start, and ask the clinic about its chambers, staff and costs.
If you have a medical emergency, call 911.
Privacy
We use Google Analytics, through Google Site Kit, to count visits and clicks on the Call, Website and Directions buttons. That shows us which pages and clinics people find useful. If you sign up, we send a monthly email newsletter through Brevo, and you can unsubscribe at any time. See our privacy policy and our terms and conditions.
